A couple of games into the World Cup (WC) and I ask the question – should the smaller cricketing nations be apart of the tournament?
I ask this because the “minnows” have been thrashed so far by the likes of the Indians, Kiwi’s and Aussies and individuals such as Sehwag and Jayawardene break records that don’t really carry much weight.
One argument is that the only way they will improve is by playing against the best and the other is that their games are a waste of time and just batting and bowling practice for the top teams.
Don’t get me wrong I want to see them improve but instead of making money out of them by including them so that more matches will be played which leads to more TV revenue. Rather invest in their local cricket development.
By that I don’t mean give out free t-shirts and biscuits but train up and invest in coaches, improve facilities and put in structured learning programmes and well managed leagues.
Get it right at that level and they will eventually compete with the big guns (yes, that includes you West Indies) and not just hope for 1 big upset as the highlight for your country every 4 years!
You can bite on both!
