EHx4 recently attended the 2012 Talent Showcase this past weekend, showcasing the best up and coming South African Talent, with our very own MightyMatt1989 representing on the drums! The performers were challenged to compose, write and arrange original compositions to be performed at the Showcase. Needless to say the songwriting was very impressive!

Overall Ratings:

Jamo251:
Deja Vu/Outro 10
-1 for the MC springing surprise solos on the musos (Jik was like haai!) lol
+2 for matts facial expression during his solo (mos wysing Gabe like )
But has the potential to be big, considering the talent levels. Mos need some lekker connections. Music Connection sponsors? Stuff like that.
Overall: A solid 7

WeldedGrass:
Hehe.. Music: 7. Talent: 8. Band: 7.5 (due to randomness of mc with the solos and some verse slip ups with ivana and some genre that I didn’t smaak). Overall: 7.5.. Like the show. Entertaining. Pretty girls. Nice atmosphere. EHx4 represented well. +5 for matty

MundaneDestroyer:
Talent was better than expected. Some acts were really cool. Show wouldve had a better overall vibe if the MC was more with it. i think people wouldve taken it more seriously as a fund raiser
Yeah. But like Jade who was awesome… And the rapping dudes.People need to recognize that. Plush not so much
Setup and layout was nice. Give the event a 6 because it had more potential to show off some of the serious talent.

Big ups to the Barberis brothers (from Barbieri Sound Reinforcement) for putting on a good showcase, may the following ones be bigger and better!

Rumours are rife that Facebook is to launch a music service at their F8 Conference on 22 September. The service will allow users to share music with each other in the same way that they can share movies, videos and links. The feature would allow online music services like Spotify and Rdio to post information to Facebook pages, which is reminscent of Apple’s Ping service. It will be similar to the way websites can be ‘liked’ on Facebook and will reportedly work the same way Ping worked in iTunes.

Facebook will be looking to provide music streaming services instead of cloud music services. They may require users to pay a monthly subscription fee to Spotify or Rdio, but users will then be able to stream unlimited amounts of music. This is different from cloud services like Google and Amazon’s services, as well as Apple’s upcoming iCloud because these services allow users to access their private collections remotely.

This is particularly cool for Facebook friends to ‘discover’ music from each other. There are a number of apps available that perform this function which have proved immensely popular in the past. One of the first apps i added to my profile was the iLike app in which one would ‘like’ certain artists and music and it shows one’s musical taste. It’s wierd that its taken Facebook so long to come up with this. This will be built into the Facebook platform, so it will be interesting to see how it will work. A Facebook Music app is bound to be on the cards as well which should be a cool thing (streaming music from your profile :D)

More to follow as developments progress…

Random pictures of Amy Winehouse in her good times, in her bad times and in her crap times.

They tried to make her go to rehab but she said nooo nooo no!

R.I.P to a legend in her own right who sang with honesty and emotion. It’s a Pity all the fame came rushing at her like a disease which made Amy collapse under the pressure and revert to Drugs as her refuge.

Enjoy!

Cape Town rock band, Stonecollar, is doing their bit to create awareness about abuse against women with the release of an acoustic track, “Turn a Blind Eye”. All proceeds from the sale of the single, scheduled for release at the beginning of August to coincide with the start of Women’s Month, will go to People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA).

“Turn A Blind Eye” is the fourth track on Stonecollar’s debut album, “Trial By Fire”, which launched over two months ago to rave reviews both locally and internationally. The lyrics are about someone who is aware of wrong-doing but does not have the courage or inclination to do anything about it. ‘It’s a sentiment that resonates all too strongly with what goes on with domestic violence,’ says Nicol. ‘People know it’s happening but they just keep silent.’

Stonecollar recorded an acoustic version of the song for the Women’s Month campaign. The new arrangement features haunting melodies and guitar work, while still maintaining the rock and roll edge that fans have come to expect. The song will be available for purchase via download as of 1 August 2011. For more information visit the band’s website, www.stonecollar.co.za, from 1 August 2011. Each download is to be sold for R7 through RhythmMusicStore.com. To do their bit for the campaign, RhythmMusicStore.com has kindly lowered their commission on the sale of this single, further benefiting POWA.

In the hopes of even further promoting this initiative, Stonecollar produced a music video to accompany the release of this single. It will be available for viewing on the band’s official website from 1 August 2011.

Johnny Depp is a muso?!?

Posted: June 28, 2011 by mightymatt1989 in Arts, Entertainment, Film, Music

With all eyes on Beyonce at Glastobury last night, perhaps Johnny Depp thought his stint as a rockstar would go unnoticed.

The actor unexpectedly joined Alice Cooper onstage at an intimate gig at the 100 Club in London last night to promote Cooper’s new album Welcome 2 My Nightmare.

Johnny helped Alice Cooper, real name Vincent Damon Furnier, perform
Depp is not stranger to the music scene – he owned notorious LA club The Viper Room from its opening in 1993 to 2004

He has appeared as a guest performer for a number of bands, including Oasis singles Fade In-Out and Fade Away, on Shane McGowan of the Pogues first solo album as well on the sound tracks for his films Chocolat and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

In the early Nineties he was a member of the band P, with Gibby Haynes, Sal Jenco, Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Steve Jones from Sex Pistols.

A blog on Alice Cooper’s official website wrote of the gig: ‘Bassist Chuck Garric and Depp seemed like old buddies up there, the.

Apple recently released their solution to syncing issues that most people with more than one Apple device have. It’s called iCloud and the aim is to integrate and sync all aspects of your digital life. Sounds pretty cool in principle and its yet another smart moves by the dudes at Apple.

There are a host of features that iCloud provides, like PhotoStream that syncs the last 1,000 photos taken for 30 days as well as pushing apps bought to any of your other devices (which I think is pretty cool, one does not need to buy the app 5 times). The same would apply to iBooks purchased within the App Store, and all personal data would also be backed up in the ‘cloud’ (a potential security risk, but a good thing to have just in case you lose your iPhone, iTouch AND iPad on the same day :0)

The biggest part of this whole thing would be the music aspect. Recently Amazon and Google have released cloud based music services (only available in the US 😦 ) and it was anticipated that Apple would follow suit. iTunes in the ‘cloud’ enables users to redownload previous iTunes purchases to other iOS devices as well as push new purchases to those devices at no additional cost. Another cool feature is iTunes Match, which for a nominal fee, any non-iTunes music in your personal library can be pushed to your other devices (one does not even need to upload it, if its in the iTunes Store). So in a nutshell, your entire music library can be online for you to download wherever you are. That is the power of iCloud.

What do you think of iCloud? Is it a step into the future or just another flashy Apple gimmick?

Class Of 2011: If Social Media Were a High School

“From the jocks to the geeks to the band nerds, even the vast world of social media comes with its own stereotypes and teenage angst. Visit the Flowtown store if you would like to purchase a poster of this graphic.”

Very funny!
