The Apple iPad is finally available for purchase within South Africa…

Imports and shady deals have been the method of choice in the meantime and the aggressive pricing strategy might just go down well with the average consumer, but not Samsung(bye bye Galaxy Tab)

Bringing an iPad into SA was an expensive affair with the cheapest rate a shade over R6000, but now Apple resellers say that one can get a 64GB 3G + WiFi iPad  for less than a 16GB Galaxy Pad (about R8000). This is unlike Apple as most Apple products remain at premium prices, but it is a sign that iPad may be here (but not here, in America Grrr) sooner rather than later. Arms and legs will no longer have to be sacrificed to acquire this beautiful tablet (maybe a finger lol).

Here they are, ladies and gentlegeeks. In no particular order,

Motorola Xoom

AKA  ‘Android Smart Tablet’.  This should determine how broad the tablet market really is. Includes: Google’s Android Honeycomb OS, Dual Core Processor, Hi-Res (1280×800) display and dual cameras.

Mintpad

A dual screen, dual booting tablet able to run both Android & Windows 7. The two screens can either fold up or fold out making it sort of a cross between a tablet and a laptop. They can also be used in unison or separately.

Sony Headman A 3D visor that allows you to play games without a telebox at all. It has two small displays (one for each eye) plus  built in earphones. A replacement for 3D TV?

Blackberry Playbook

RIM’s foray into the tablet world. They have announced it, they have shown it running Adobe’s Flash and they have revealed 3 different models however, they have yet to give their much anticipated device a concrete release date other than to say it will be out sometime in early 2011. RIM needs to get back into the game in a major way, BlackBerry 6 and the Torch don’t count, and the PlayBook very well could be the device to bring them back to relevance.

Playstation Phone

Sony Ericsson is said to be working on a device, codename Zeus, that will apparently be part PSP and part Android Gingerbread powered smartphone. While the debate wages on as to whether or not the device is too late to market , it’s hard to deny that the device is one of the most anticipated releases of the upcoming year.
