Class Of 2011: If Social Media Were a High School

“From the jocks to the geeks to the band nerds, even the vast world of social media comes with its own stereotypes and teenage angst. Visit the Flowtown store if you would like to purchase a poster of this graphic.”

This was the reponse by many a music lover after the Best New Artist Grammy Award went to relatively unknown jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding. Many expected YoungMoney affiliate Drake or teeny-bopper Justine, sorry, Justin Bieber to win the award (sorry for all the Beliebers :P). Florence + The Machine and even Mumford & Sons had high hopes for the award, but it was eventually Esperanza that prevailed, stunning the mainstream music audience…(Who is this chick??)

In short, she is one talented young woman. Proficient on the double bass, bass guitar, violin, oboe and clarinet, she was able to play the violin at only 5 years old. Spalding says that discovering the bass  was like  “waking up one day and realizing you’re in love with a co-worker.” Apparently she picked it up after she got bored playing on the other instruments. A full scholarship at the Berklee College of Music enabled her to grow and soon she was touring the local jazz scene. She does not consider herself a musical prodigy though. “I am surrounded by prodigies everywhere I go, but because they are a little older than me, or not a female, or not on a major label, they are not acknowledged as such.”  The truth is, such talent should not go unnoticed and it seems like her star is shining brighter and brighter.

Three albums have been released so far: Junjo (2006), Esperanza (2008) and Chamber Music Society (2010). She’ll also be performing at the 2011 Cape Town Jazz Festival (Yay!!)

tech it or leave it 😛
